Dance Makes Us Sexy, Skinny, and Smart

the breast doc

I reveal all my staying skinny zen secrets in my book and blogs, but this one is my ultimate FAVORITE - dance. Dancing makes your spirit sing. Have you ever watched the videos of the biddies talking about their regrets? What does the fabulous one always say - you know, the one in her gorgeous suit, perfectly coifed hair and blood red lipstick: “I wish I had danced more!” Lady, I hear you! You are my tribe!

Dance increases circulation, strengthens muscles, benefits the brain, decreases weight, relieves stress, raises confidence, and is healing to the soul, thus creating breast health. Dancing is the breast exercise.

Dance IS the best cardio therapy

A study from the University of Brighton, led by Drs. Nick Smeeton and Gary Brickley, found that dance styles including contemporary, street and swing burned more calories than running, swimming or cycling for the same amount of time.

“Dance not only appears to increase positive and reduce negative emotions, which are typical effects of exercise, but we also found that dancing actually reduced feelings of fatigue too,” says Dr. Nick Smeeton,. “People may be familiar with runners’ high and there appears to be a similar effect after dancing, too. Furthermore, it seems to have an energizing effect. Add in the known benefits of social interaction you get whilst dancing and it becomes a powerful way to improve your health and well-being.”

Dancing benefits your brain and muscles

Learning to dance is physically and mentally challenging. The brain has two hemispheres, the left, which controls linear or logical thinking, and the right, which is controls emotion and creativity. When you complete a task like a puzzle you are using both sides of the brain, thus benefitting that beautiful mind of yours to decrease risk of dementia and Alzheimers disease while increasing memory and cognitive function, evolving into one hell of a smarty pants. Rock climbing or learning to dance are also included in puzzles, since you are having to think about your next move or puzzling together your path or steps. When you combine a puzzle with exercise you’re strengthening not only your muscles, but your brain power!

Richard Powers of Stanford University reports that dancing increases intelligence and improves muscle memory. Dancing requires decision making, which he says is the “essence of intelligence.” He also reports dancing uses “several brain functions at once…kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional.”

Another 21-year study at the University of Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that senior citizens who frequently danced reduced their risk of dementia by 76 percent, which was interestingly double that of any other cognitive or physical activity.

Just dance! Tell ’em you’re doing the brain boogie!

Dancing improves balance and decreases dizziness

Many women suffer from dizziness and as we get older it is important to start actives that improve our balance to reduce falls. Researchers at Imperial College London studied the difference in ballet dancers and same aged female rowers. Aerobic exercise is linear like rowing, but what they discovered is that dance uses proprioception – the body’s unconscious perception of movement and orientation – and balance. Proprioception, basically, is what allows us to move our limbs without looking at them. Driving is the perfect example: We can keep our eyes on the road and use our hands and arms to steer the car, while our legs and feet are manipulating speed. Other activities using proprioception are tree climbing and rock climbing.

Dancing makes you feel happy, confident and sexy

Now here is your proof that dancing battles depression. Researchers Akandere and Demir found with their study, "The Effect of Dance Over Depression," that after 12 weeks of dance, a group of co-ed dancers, as compared to a control group, had decreased depression.

Serotonin and endorphins are brain chemicals that affect your mood and energy levels. When you dance, your body naturally releases these neurotransmitters, which reduces stress and depression. Added to the fact that it increases circulation, which benefits the heart and lungs, and strengthens muscle tone, dance is an incredible form of exercise.
